The Stories That Make Us

Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?

I think our experiences shape who we are more than anything else. As we grow up, we learn from the world around us — from our parents, our friends, the things we watch on TV, and the conversations we have with others. Every experience leaves a mark on us, whether it’s something positive that helps us grow or something painful that changes the way we see the world.

The challenges and traumas we face can shape us in ways we don’t always realize. Some people are able to overcome those struggles and use them as a source of strength, while for others, certain experiences can leave wounds that are much harder to heal from.

At the same time, who we are inside can influence how we respond to those experiences. I believe we are a combination of both — our experiences shape us, but the person we are helps determine how we carry those experiences with us.

  1. I think I agree with you. I am a strong person inside, and have managed to weather some very severe periods in my life. I determined early on in my life that I had to keep going, keep surviving. It doesn’t mean I think I’m better than someone who chose differently at all; it just means that that’s the path *I* chose.
