I think humans will eventually try to colonize Mars, but I’m not convinced that’s a good thing.
If it ever comes to that, what does it say about us? To me, it would mean we failed to protect the planet we already had. Earth is beautiful. It’s the only world known to naturally sustain human life, and yet we continue to damage it. If we destroy our own home, do we really deserve a second chance on a planet that was never meant for us?
Then there is the question of who gets to go.
Would it be a lottery system? Would everyone have an equal opportunity, or would only the wealthy be able to afford a place on the journey? Maybe a select group of scientists, doctors, engineers, contractors, and other specialists would be chosen because they have skills necessary for survival. But who decides whose life is valuable enough to make the list? Who gets left behind?
Life on Mars would be nothing like life on Earth. The planet doesn’t naturally provide breathable air, liquid water on the surface, or a stable environment for humans. Colonists would likely live inside domes or underground habitats, relying on technology for every aspect of survival. Air would have to be produced. Water would need to be recycled. Food would have to be grown in controlled environments or shipped from Earth until sustainable systems were established.
Everything would be rationed. Every resource would matter.
And what happens when something goes wrong?
A leak in a habitat, a failed oxygen generator, a damaged food supply system—any one of these could become a life-or-death emergency. Resources would have to be redirected, and difficult decisions would be made. If one colony section became impossible to save, would leaders focus on protecting the majority? Would they seal off part of a dome to preserve resources for everyone else? Would help arrive in time, or would the distance between Earth and Mars make rescue impossible?
The idea of colonizing Mars is often presented as humanity’s next great adventure. But I think the reality would be far less glamorous. It would be a life of constant maintenance, strict resource management, and dependence on technology that can never fail.
Maybe one day we’ll reach Mars. The bigger question is whether we should be focusing on finding another world to live on, or learning how to better care for the one we already have.
