What would happen if time became aware of itself?
I keep coming back to this thought, and it never really resolves into anything comforting.
What would happen if time became aware of itself?
Not as something passive. Not as something we move through without resistance. But as something conscious. Something that notices everything it has ever carried.
Every ending it never paused for.
Every moment it erased without permission.
Every life it moved forward while leaving something else behind.
I don’t think it would be neutral.
I don’t think awareness would make it kind.
And I definitely don’t think we’d understand what it would decide to do next.
Because we always assume time is something we live inside of.
But if it ever realized we exist inside it…
I’m not sure we’d still be the ones observing it.
We might already be the thing being observed.
I’ll go first:
If time became aware of itself, I don’t think it would “end the world” in a loud way.
I think it would start noticing patterns it was never meant to notice.
Repeats. Loops. Fractures in memory. Moments that feel like they’ve already been lived.
And once something infinite starts noticing itself…
I don’t think it stays stable for very long.
Your turn:
What do you think happens next?
- Does time stay the same once it becomes aware?
- Does it react to what it sees?
- Or do we only realize it was always aware… after it’s too late?
