Can a Great Book Be Taught Too Much?

Daily writing prompt
What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?

One classic book I believe is slightly overrated is To Kill a Mockingbird. I do think it tells an important story and has meaningful themes about racism, justice, and morality. The writing itself is strong, and I understand why it became such a widely taught novel in schools.

However, I think part of the reason it feels overrated to me is because it was assigned so often throughout my school years. From middle school through high school, it seemed like every English class returned to the same book, the same essays, and the same discussions. After reading and analyzing it repeatedly, the impact of the story started to feel less powerful and more exhausting.

I still respect the novel and its place in literature, but I also think there are many other important books and perspectives that deserve just as much attention in classrooms. Sometimes when a book is treated as the “ultimate” classic year after year, it can lose some of the emotional connection it originally had.
