My Approach to Budgeting

Daily writing prompt
Write about your approach to budgeting.

I’ll be honest—spending has always been a kind of therapy for me. I know it’s not the healthiest habit, but it’s something I’ve used to cope with stress or just brighten a rough day. The problem is, it’s easy to go overboard, and that can quickly spiral into financial stress.

So, I’ve been trying to find a budgeting strategy that actually works for me, without feeling like punishment. What’s helping me right now is a simple, hands-on system: my trusty binder.

I use a binder with clear zipper pockets, and I label each pocket for a specific purpose—gas, fun/entertainment, bills, savings. Every paycheck, I split my money between the pockets. Then, when a bill is due, I move the cash to my CashApp card to pay it. If I want to buy something online, like a game or a little treat, I load the money onto my CashApp for that purpose.

It sounds simple, but it’s been really effective. Seeing the money physically separated helps me resist the urge to spend everything at once, and it keeps me mindful of where my money is going. Budgeting doesn’t feel like a chore anymore—it’s just a way to make my spending work for me, instead of against me.

I’m still learning, and I’m definitely not perfect at it. But this binder system? It’s the first approach that actually makes sense for me, and that’s enough to keep me motivated.
