Part 3, A Voice in the Leaves

Chapter Two — Into the FrostLight

The shimmer wavered ahead, barely visible between the trunks, like sunlight bouncing off water. I took a deep breath, the spiral in my chest thrumming softly, steady and warm with Aeris’s guidance.

Pickles chirped from my hand, tail flicking with excitement. I lifted him briefly so he could perch on my shoulder beside Aeris, and he squeaked triumphantly, nudging my sleeve. His tiny claws scratched gently, and I laughed. Even small, he was always ready to help.

The forest grew quieter. The usual hum of life softened, replaced by something… deliberate. Leaves rustled overhead, though the air was still. A faint, wordless whisper threaded through the trees, brushing against the spiral inside me. It wasn’t threatening. Just… curious, like someone testing the edges of my awareness.

Aeris leaned closer, brushing my cheek with his icy wings. The spiral pulsed in response, coiling around him, steadying itself. My tiny dragon was my anchor. Pickles chirped again, tail curling protectively around my wrist, sensing the subtle shift in the air.

I stepped forward. The petals at my feet lifted, hovering, arranging themselves into a loose pattern of twisting gold and pale blue light—just like the spiral in my chest. The whisper seemed to hum in rhythm with it, almost teasing me.

“This is a puzzle,” I murmured. My fingers tingled, the spiral guiding me. Aeris pressed lightly against my wrist, small wings brushing the edges of the glowing petals. Pickles chirped as if to say, Figure it out—you can do it.

I raised my hand toward the floating pattern. The petals shimmered in response, moving slightly out of reach. I adjusted my steps, shifting the rhythm of my spiral with Aeris’s guidance. Slowly, carefully, the pattern began to align, twisting and coiling until a faint pathway of light appeared between the trees, pointing toward the shimmer.

The whisper hummed, soft but unmistakable. Someone—or something—was watching. Not the guardian itself, but perhaps a messenger. The forest seemed to hold its breath.

I glanced at Aeris. His tiny head tilted, eyes bright and steady. Pickles chirped again from my shoulder. “Okay,” I whispered, taking the first step along the glowing path, “let’s see where this leads.”

And as we moved forward, the spiral in my chest hummed in perfect time with Aeris, and the forest seemed to bend just slightly in response, guiding us toward the next secret waiting in the shadows.
