Part 2, Steps into the Unknown

Chapter Two — Into the FrostLight

The shimmer between the trees pulsed faintly, beckoning. I took a careful step forward, the spiral in my chest humming in response. Aeris shifted on my shoulder, wings fluttering lightly, sending a faint curl of frost along my arm. The cool mist wrapped around me like a promise: I wasn’t alone.

Pickles chirped from my palm, tail flicking, eager to see what came next. I had to lift him up to let him perch on my shoulder beside Aeris, and he squeaked in triumph, his tiny claws gripping my jacket. He looked thrilled—but I knew the real guidance came from Aeris.

The forest had changed. Light filtered differently here, threading through the trees in violet-and-silver patterns that seemed to shift when I blinked. The spiral pulsed unevenly. My chest fluttered with uncertainty.

“Easy,” I whispered to myself, and Aeris pressed against my cheek, wings brushing gently. The spiral steadied immediately, winding in tandem with his icy rhythm.

I stepped deeper. Leaves drifted down slowly, brushing my shoulders and arms. Tiny trails of frost followed Aeris’s wings, settling like dew. Pickles chirped at each drifting leaf, nudging my arm when one brushed too closely against the spiral. I laughed softly; he was small, but somehow, his presence made the forest feel warmer.

Then the shimmer pulsed again, brighter this time. I realized the path wasn’t just lit—it was reacting to me. The spiral inside me resonated with it, warm and cool, winding around Aeris’s magic. Each step forward was like tuning a delicate instrument.

A shadow moved between the trees, quick and fleeting, just beyond the shimmer. My chest pulsed faster. Not fear. Anticipation. Curiosity.

I glanced at Aeris. His gaze was calm, steady, and so full of quiet confidence that I could almost hear him say, You’ve got this. Pickles chirped again, tail curling like a tiny banner of encouragement.

Together, we stepped closer to the shimmer, the forest holding its breath around us. Each pulse of the spiral was like a heartbeat, intertwined with Aeris’s rhythm. I wasn’t alone. I had my dragon, my tiny friend, and the magic waiting just ahead.

And something—someone—was waiting too, just beyond the next bend.
