Part 12 — Testing the Glow

Chapter One-Into the FrostLight

The clearing shimmered around me, soft light curling along the edges of every leaf and petal. My chest pulsed steadily, the spiral of magic inside me alive and warm-and-cool at once. I lifted my hands, and the petals floated, turning and twisting as if dancing to the rhythm of my pulse.

Pickles chirped happily at my feet, spinning in tight circles, tail curling proudly. Aeris perched on my shoulder, wings lightly quivering, sending a faint mist of frost along the pool’s edge. The coolness brushed my skin like a whisper, steadying the spiral when it flickered unevenly.

I pushed the magic a little further, coaxing petals into arcs, weaving threads of light above the water. The spiral shimmered along my fingers, alive but unpredictable. A sudden ripple passed through the pool, twisting in ways I hadn’t intended. My chest flickered.

Aeris leaned closer, a soft hiss of icy breath against my cheek. The frost from his wings brushed the water and the petals, steadying them in gentle waves. Pickles chirped sharply, but it was Aeris who reminded me, without a word, that I could trust myself.

I closed my eyes, breathed slowly, and let the warmth-and-cold spiral flow naturally. The ripples stilled. Petals floated in delicate spirals. The pool shimmered with quiet approval.

At the edge of the clearing, a soft shimmer caught my eye—barely there, like light bending around something unseen. The guardian. Watching. Patient. Waiting.

I smiled, feeling the pulse of the spiral steady in my chest. With Aeris at my side and Pickles chirping nearby, I was learning. I was growing. The forest, the magic, even the guardian—all of it seemed to notice.
