Part 10, The Whisper Beneath the Trees

Chapter One-Into the FrostLight

The moment the veil closed behind us, the forest felt… different.

Not harsher.
Not dangerous.
Just awake in a way it hadn’t been before.

The air hummed, low and steady, like the faint tuning of an instrument warming up. The violet path under my feet brightened with each step, responding not just to Pickles or Aeris this time—but to me.

A soft pulse echoed in my chest.

Not the panicked flutter from before.
Something steadier.
Like the forest was matching my rhythm.

Aeris settled on my shoulder, tail lightly curled around my collar. Pickles hopped excitedly ahead, chirping at every glowing flower he passed, as if checking to make sure the forest was paying attention.

It was.

Branches overhead rustled without wind.
Petals drifted down slowly, each one glowing with soft light.
The path curved gently toward a deeper shade of twilight between the trees.

Then the tug inside me sharpened—like a faint whisper tugging at my ribs.

I stopped.

“What is that?” I whispered.

Aeris hummed, a cool vibration against my skin. Pickles lifted his head and chirped quietly, not playful this time. Almost… reverent.

The whisper came again—wordless, gentle, but unmistakably calling.

I took a slow step forward.

The forest brightened, its light washing outward in a slow wave as if welcoming me deeper.

We moved together, the three of us.
Pickles at my feet.
Aeris alert at my shoulder.
Me following the soft pull of magic threading through the air.

The path opened into a clearing I hadn’t seen before.

Not the one with the archway.
Not the shimmering meadow.
Somewhere new.

A pool of water filled the center—small, still, impossibly clear. The surface glowed faintly with shifting colors, reflecting not the sky but the forest itself: violet, silver, blue, gold.

As I approached, the flicker under my ribs responded, pulsing in time with the pool’s glow. The air thickened with quiet expectation.

Pickles nudged the edge of the water, and tiny sparks of golden light rippled outward.

Aeris lowered his head and released a soft, cool trill—icy blue tendrils drifting over the surface and melting into it like frost dissolving in sunlight.

Both sets of ripples flowed toward the center.

Then the pool answered.

A spiral of light rose slowly from the water—soft gold twined with pale blue. The same pattern I’d seen in the swirling petals. The same one carved into the archway.

My heart thudded.

“It’s calling me again,” I breathed.

The spiral hovered, shimmering.
A warmth flickered at my fingertips.
A coolness followed, curling between my knuckles.

I lifted my hand without fully deciding to.

The spiral brightened—then gently stretched toward me.

But just before it touched my palm, it paused.

Waiting.

My throat tightened.
The dragons leaned close.

“I don’t know what you want,” I whispered. “But I’m trying. I really am.”

A soft breeze circled the clearing, stirring glowing leaves. The spiral pulsed once—soft, encouraging.

I exhaled and reached out fully.

The moment my fingers brushed the light, it melted into me—warm and cool at once, sliding along my skin and sinking into the flicker beneath my ribs.

It didn’t hurt.
It didn’t overwhelm.

It simply settled.

Like a puzzle piece clicking into place.

The pool stilled instantly.
The forest hushed.
Even the air seemed to hold its breath.

Aeris pressed his head to my cheek—warm, grounding. Pickles curled his tail around my ankle, humming with excitement he barely contained.

The flicker inside me glowed once, stronger than ever.

And the whisper that followed wasn’t a call this time.

It was a promise.

More is coming.
